Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 explained before you start

Who made the 2025 turn-based RPG, where it shipped and when, how its real-time parry system works, what the age rating covers, and what to know before starting.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is the first game from a French studio of about thirty people, a turn-based role-playing game in which you also have to press the parry button at the right moment, and the game this site's Now Playing category opens with. This page gives you the makers, the platforms and dates, how the combat and the world actually work, why a small studio's debut became one of the most talked-about releases of 2025, and what to know before you start it in 2026. Every date, credit and figure below is taken from the pages listed under Sources.

Who made it

The Steam store page lists Sandfall Interactive as developer and Kepler Interactive as publisher; the PlayStation Store gives the publisher's full name as Kepler Interactive Limited. Sandfall's own site says the studio was "founded in 2020 in France" and names its core people: Guillaume Broche as CEO and creative director, Tom Guillermin as CTO and lead programmer, François Meurisse as COO and producer, Jennifer Svedberg-Yen as lead writer, Nicholas Maxson-Francombe as art director and Lorien Testard as composer. The CNC, the French public body for film and games, published a profile of the studio on 4 July 2025 that adds the scale: a core team of "around 30 people" split between Montpellier and Paris, founded by Broche, Guillermin and Meurisse. The same article records that the studio "received pre-production funding from the CNC at the end of 2021" through its video game support fund, which is why a public agency has a page about it at all. The Steam About text calls it "the debut game from Sandfall Interactive, fully realized in Unreal Engine 5."

When and where it shipped

Platform Region Date Source
Windows (Steam) Worldwide 24 April 2025 Steam store page 1903340
PlayStation 5 North America (US store) 24 April 2025 PlayStation Store product page
Xbox Series X S, Windows (Xbox app), Xbox Cloud Gaming North America (US store) 24 April 2025
Windows (Epic Games Store) Worldwide Listed as available; date not readable on 6 September 2026 Official site store links

The three store pages we could read all carry the same date, and the official site's anniversary note ("1 year since we released") is pinned to 24 April, so the dataset row records 24 April 2025 as the first release on every platform. Two limits to state plainly. The Epic Games Store page refused a scripted read on 6 September 2026, so that row has a platform from the official site but no date of its own. And the PlayStation and Xbox dates come from the US storefronts; we did not read the European or Japanese stores, so if a regional day differs it is not captured here. Since launch the official site lists a free "Thank You" update dated 12 December 2025 and a photo mode added on 11 February, and the Steam page lists four downloadable content entries, none of which is needed to play the game described below.

What the game does

The premise is on the Steam page and it is the whole hook: once a year a figure called the Paintress wakes and paints a number on a monolith, and "everyone past that age turns to smoke and fades away." The number counts down. It is about to become 33, and the people it dooms send an expedition to kill her. You lead that expedition, "Expedition 33", following the trail of the ones that went before and, in the game's words, discovering their fate. The named leads are Gustave and Maelle, and the party grows as you travel through named regions the page lists, such as the Island of Visages and the Forgotten Battlefield, on a world map where recruited companions unlock new ways to travel.

Combat is turn-based, with a menu of attacks, skills and items, but the Steam text is precise about what is added on top: you "dodge, parry, and counter in real time, chain combos by mastering attack rhythms, and target enemy weak points using a free aim system." In practice that means an enemy's turn is not a cutscene. Every incoming blow has a timing, a well-timed parry cancels the damage and can turn into a counter, a dodge is easier but returns nothing, and your own attacks have button presses inside them that extend the combo. Character building is conventional for the genre, "gear, stats, skills, and character synergies" in the page's list, and the studio's site describes the whole as "an epic single-player narrative-driven adventure." It is one player only; the PlayStation Store lists it as such.

Why it matters

Three things, each from a source. The first is scale against result. The CNC article quotes Benjamin Dimanche, the studio's marketing and publishing producer, in July 2025: "We've now sold over 3 million copies, just a month after the game's release." The same article says the team "approached development with an indie mindset while making the most of cutting-edge tools and technologies." On 24 April 2026, RPG Site reported that Kepler Interactive and Sandfall Interactive had announced, on X, that the game "has sold 8 million copies worldwide", after crossing five million in October 2025. A thirty-person team is not the usual size for those numbers, and the game is a data point in an argument about what a mid-sized studio can do.

The second is the combat. The Steam page describes the design as "an evolution of JRPGs" in which "real-time actions enhance the heart of turn-based combat." The parry system is the reason people either love the game or bounce off it, and it is worth knowing that it is the point rather than a side option. The third is the sound. The CNC profile says Lorien Testard "spent five years composing, writing, and performing the game's music," and the Steam page calls the soundtrack heartbreaking in its own marketing voice; the studio's site lists Testard as a core member, which is unusual for a composer and tells you how central the music is to the thing.

What to know before starting

  • Check the rating first. The Xbox and PlayStation stores both list ESRB Mature 17+ with "Blood and Gore, Strong Language, Suggestive Themes, Violence"; Steam sets a required age of 17 and its content note says the game "features depictions of violence, blood and suicide, and imagery that some players may find disturbing."
  • The parry is mandatory learning. Dodging is more forgiving and parrying pays more; the game expects you to move from one to the other. Steam lists an adjustable difficulty, so lower it rather than quit if the timing is not landing, and raise it later.
  • It is on a subscription on one platform. The Xbox page lists it as included with Game Pass on console and PC and playable through cloud streaming, and it is an Xbox Play Anywhere title, which means one purchase covers Series X|S and the Windows app.
  • PC needs an SSD and 55 GB. The Steam minimum is Windows 10, an Intel Core i7-8700K or AMD Ryzen 5 1600X, 8 GB of RAM and a GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB class card, and the page says that spec gives "1080p 30FPS low settings gameplay." A controller is recommended on the Steam page and support is listed as full.
  • Voice is English or French. Both stores list full audio in those two languages and screen text in roughly twenty; the Steam page counts twenty including Arabic, Japanese, Korean and Ukrainian. The world is, in the Steam page's words, inspired by Belle Époque France, and playing with French voices and English text is a legitimate way in.
  • It is single-player only. There is no multiplayer to worry about and nothing time-limited; the four DLC entries on Steam are optional additions, and the December 2025 update on the official site was free.

The row in the dataset

The dataset lists Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 with Sandfall Interactive as developer, Kepler Interactive as publisher, a first release of 24 April 2025 on Windows PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, the genre RPG and the era current, with the Steam store page as the source URL. It is the first current-era game in the set; when the dataset articles start comparing eras, the gap between this row's first release and the newest retro row above it is thirty years.
