Final Fantasy Resonance: what is known, what is not

Square Enix's first HD-2D Final Fantasy, rebuilt from Brave Exvius, is due 22 October 2026 on five platforms. The prices, the demo, the ratings and one stray date.

Final Fantasy Resonance is due on Thursday 22 October 2026, ten days from this writing, on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC through Steam and the Xbox app. Square Enix calls it "the first HD-2D game in the FINAL FANTASY series", and its press release adds the fact that frames everything else: the game "is based on the first story arc of the mobile game FINAL FANTASY BRAVE EXVIUS", "refined and extensively rebuilt as a full-fledged console-quality RPG experience". This page sets out what Square Enix and the three big stores say today: the date and the hour, what each edition costs, what the free demo covers, which age labels the stores show, one Microsoft record that disagrees with all of them, and what nobody has said yet.

Everything below was read on 12 October 2026. The script in code/ffr-listing-audit.py re-reads the store records and Square Enix's retailer list, prints the same figures, and flags any that have changed since:

The date, and the hour

Square Enix's press release of 3 September gives the day once for the full game, "on Oct. 22, 2026", and its press site lists "10/22/2026". Every storefront we read agrees on the day. Steam's page says "Oct 22, 2026" and, today, "This game plans to unlock in approximately 10 days"; the North American Square Enix Store lists "Release Date: October 22, 2026" for the boxed copies. Two stores also give an hour.

Store, record Release timestamp What it means
PlayStation Store, US 2026-10-22 04:00 UTC midnight in New York
Microsoft Store, the game (9NNCPRH9VWG4) 2026-10-22 04:00 UTC midnight in New York
Microsoft Store, Digital Deluxe (9NXJZGKPFMKK) 2026-10-22 04:00 UTC midnight in New York
Microsoft Store, the record with the Xbox and PC packages (9N8JS091F5G0) 2026-11-06 05:00 UTC midnight in New York, fifteen days later
Steam, US, UK and Germany Oct 22, 2026 (no hour)

The last Microsoft row is the odd one. 9N8JS091F5G0 is the catalogue record that holds the actual download packages for Xbox consoles and Windows, and it sells nothing itself; the record a buyer pays through, 9NNCPRH9VWG4, says 22 October, and so does the Xbox store page built on it. The 6 November stamp was there when this site first looked on 9 October and is still there today. Midnight in New York is 04:00 UTC before the clocks change on 1 November and 05:00 UTC after it, so the stamp is a deliberate local midnight, not a typo in the hour. What it is for, we could not find out: no Square Enix page mentions a second date, and the press release names Xbox Series X|S and "XBOX on PC" among the versions arriving on 22 October.

Midnight in New York is 9 pm on Wednesday the 21st in Los Angeles. Neither store says whether the West Coast starts then or at its own midnight, and Steam gives no hour at all. Dates also move: this one is the publisher's stated plan ten days out, held by every listing we read except one.

What the game is, in the publisher's words

The official site's story summary opens in "The Kingdom of Knights, Grandshelt", where Rain, commander of an airship squadron, and Lasswell, his childhood friend and deputy, investigate the Earth Shrine, meet "a mysterious man clad in black armor", and watch the Earth Crystal shatter. The armoured man is Veritas of the Dark, "One of the Sworn Six of Paladia", who "schemes to annihilate all Crystals". Rain and Lasswell set out after him with Fina, a girl who "appears from the Earth Crystal" with no memory but her name. The site lists nine characters, each voiced by an English and a Japanese actor (Rain: Clifford Chapin and Nobuhiko Okamoto).

The five feature descriptions are the closest thing to a design statement:

  • Pixel art in 3D scenes. "What if FINAL FANTASY had continued to push the limits of pixel art?" The HD-2D look combines "dynamic camera angles and pixelized 3D models".
  • Series furniture. "airships, crystals, espers and moogles woven into the fabric of the story". The press release adds "the return of chocobos".
  • Turn-based battles with a break mechanic. "Exploit enemy weaknesses to stagger them", which breaks their defences "to seize extra turns", and finish with "powerful Resonance attacks".
  • Visions. In the site's words, "echoes of beloved FINAL FANTASY characters", who fight beside the party. The press release names Cloud, Tidus and the Warrior of Light, and says Sephiroth appears as an optional fight, with players "able to find and challenge him in hopes of winning and unlocking a special reward".
  • Side content. Gilgamesh as a "wandering swordmaster", a Colosseum, a "Chamber of Arms" of foes sealed in legendary weapons, and Ultima Weapon.

The Brave Exvius origin matters for what a buyer can expect. Square Enix says the story is that mobile game's first arc, "Far from just a direct port", but it has not said how long the rebuilt game runs, and the only length it has published is the demo's.

Who makes it

Every Microsoft record and the PlayStation Store name SQUARE ENIX CO., LTD. as developer or publisher. Steam lists two developers, "Square Enix" and "LANCARSE Ltd.", with Square Enix as publisher; no Square Enix page we read describes LANCARSE's part. The copyright line on Steam reads "© SQUARE ENIX LOGO ILLUSTRATION:© YOSHITAKA AMANO", the same credit the press release carries. The release puts the series at "over 212 million units worldwide".

On this site the nearest relative is Chrono Trigger, Square's 1995 role-playing game, and the previous upcoming page was Grand Theft Auto VI, due four weeks after this one.

datasets/games.csv records Final Fantasy Resonance with Square Enix and LANCARSE Ltd. as developers (Steam's credit), Square Enix as publisher, a first release of 2026-10-22 (the date as announced), the platforms PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC, the genre RPG (Steam's and Square Enix's label) and the era upcoming: the thirty-fifth row.

What it costs, and what the Deluxe adds

Store, market Standard Digital Deluxe
Steam, US $49.99 $59.99
Steam, UK £39.99 £49.99
Steam, Germany 49,99€ 59,99€
PlayStation Store, US $49.99 $59.99
Microsoft Store, US $49.99 $59.99

None carries a discount, and Square Enix's press site lists $49.99. The Deluxe costs ten more in each currency. Per Steam's pre-purchase announcement of 9 June, the extra is the "Magitek & Grimoire Deluxe Pack": an item that turns the player's chocobo into magitek armour, "an item exclusive to this pack that unlocks a certain character's Fel Meteor Limit Burst", a Mastery Ring that increases the MRP gained in battle, and consumables (five each of Tents, Mist Potions, Mist Ethers and Phoenix Downs, three Remedies). A pre-order bonus, the "Magitek Airship & Squire Starter Pack", restyles the airship and adds starter equipment. That an exclusive ability sits in the paid pack is the part to weigh; the rest is cosmetic or early convenience.

Pre-orders opened on 9 June 2026: Microsoft's purchase window starts at 15:00 UTC that day, and Steam's announcement is dated the same day. Boxed copies exist for some platforms only. Square Enix's own retailer list, the one behind the official site's Buy Now button, has 22 links for the US: physical standard editions for PS5, Switch and Switch 2 at Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop and the Square Enix e-STORE, and digital-only entries for Xbox and Steam. Its German list adds a Collector's Edition for PlayStation, Switch and Switch 2 through the Square Enix Store, and the North American Square Enix Store offers one too; neither page's text gives the Collector's price or contents in a form we could read.

The demo

The demo has been out since 3 September on all six versions, per the press release: PS5, Switch 2, Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and Xbox on PC. It covers "the game's opening through the first chapter (approximately 3-5 hours of gameplay), with save data carrying over to the full game". Steam's demo listing (app 4474710, free) adds "While some level restrictions apply, you can freely explore the entire first chapter exactly as it appears in the full version", and the PlayStation Store page lists the demo as Free. Microsoft's demo record went live at 15:00 UTC on 3 September, 49 days before launch. For a game rebuilt from a mobile story, three to five hours of the real first chapter is the most direct evidence of what the full release plays like, available before any money changes hands.

On a PC

Steam lists Windows only, no macOS or Linux, and both its minimum and recommended specifications require Windows 11, a 64-bit system, 8 GB of memory and 15 GB of storage. The minimum targets 1920×1080 at 30 frames per second on the Low preset with a GeForce GTX 1650, Radeon RX 6400 or Arc A580 and a Core i3-8100 or Ryzen 3 2300X; the recommended targets 60 frames per second on the Highest preset with a Radeon RX 5500 XT or the same GTX 1650 and Arc A580, and a Ryzen 5 2500X or the same i3-8100. Steam's feature list includes full controller support, DualSense support, Steam Cloud, Family Sharing, adjustable difficulty and "Playable without Timed Input". Full audio is in English and Japanese; the text adds French, German, Spanish (Spain), Simplified and Traditional Chinese and Korean.

Ratings: what the stores display

Board Label Descriptors, as the store lists them Where shown
ESRB (North America) Everyone 10+ Fantasy Violence, Suggestive Themes, Language, Alcohol Reference PlayStation Store, Steam, Microsoft
PEGI (Europe) 12 Violence, Bad Language; In-Game Purchases Steam, Microsoft
USK (Germany) 12 Fantasy-Gewalt (fantasy violence) Steam, Microsoft
CERO (Japan) C crime Steam, Microsoft
Australian Classification M Mature themes and violence Steam, Microsoft

We took these labels from the stores and did not read the boards' own databases, so the table records what a buyer sees at the point of sale. Steam's ratings block also carries two entries flagged as generated by Steam rather than issued by a board, a German 16 and an Indonesian entry, which are left out here. The PEGI entry on both stores marks in-game purchases; whether that means more than the Deluxe pack, nothing we read says.

What is not known

  • The 6 November stamp. One Microsoft record dates the Xbox and PC packages fifteen days after every other listing; no source explains it.
  • The hour on Steam, and whether the US midnight on the console stores is Eastern for everyone.
  • The full game's length. Square Enix has published only the demo's three to five hours.
  • How much of Brave Exvius is in it. The press release says the first story arc; how that arc maps to chapters is not stated.
  • Collector's Edition contents and price. Listed by two Square Enix stores, but not readable on either page.
  • Nintendo eShop prices. We did not read Nintendo's store for this page; Square Enix's US list links its Switch and Switch 2 entries.
  • The UK Nintendo versions. Square Enix's UK retailer list holds six links, none for a Nintendo console; the press release names both Switch models without a regional exception.
  • Reviews. Nothing we read says when reviews may be published.

Before the 22nd

The demo is the reason not to pre-order blind: it is free on every version, it is the real first chapter, and its save carries over, so a player loses nothing by trying it first. The Deluxe's extra ten buys starter items and a Limit Burst that only that pack unlocks. And the date has held since the demo announcement, apart from one Microsoft record that points to 6 November for reasons no source gives; the script above is the quick way to see whether that record, or any other, has moved.

Why this page has no pictures

This site reproduces only images a publisher issues for press or editorial use, under terms we can read. Square Enix's North American press hub does list Final Fantasy Resonance screenshots, artwork and logos, but its Terms of Use grant the licence to "a member of the press" and refer to log-in credentials issued at Square Enix's discretion, and we have no such registration. The official site's media gallery is not labelled for press use. With no press kit whose terms cover us, the page carries no images.
