Marvel's Wolverine: what is known, what is not

Insomniac's PS5 Wolverine game before it ships: the publisher's stated date quoted, the ESRB and PEGI ratings, what official pages say it is, and what is not known.

Marvel's Wolverine is the next game from the studio that made Marvel's Spider-Man, it is eight days from its stated date as we write, and it is the first announced title this site covers before release. That order matters. Nothing below comes from playing it, because nobody outside the publisher's preview events has, and nothing comes from a review, because there are none. What follows is the developer and publisher, the stated date and every official page it was stated on, what those pages say the game is, the two age ratings already on record, a plain list of what is not known, and what to weigh before paying for it early. Every fact carries the page it came from, and every page was read on 7 September 2026.

Who is making it

The PlayStation.com game page lists the developer as Insomniac Games, Inc. and the publisher as Sony Interactive Entertainment, and says the game was "Created in collaboration with Marvel Games". Sony's corporate page for the game calls Insomniac "the studio behind the critically acclaimed Marvel's Spider-Man games". That lineage can be dated from Sony's own material rather than from memory. A PlayStation.Blog post of 4 April 2018 by James Stevenson, then Insomniac's community director, said "Marvel's Spider-Man will launch on Friday, September 7, 2018 exclusively for the PlayStation 4 system", and a Sony Interactive Entertainment press release dated 20 October 2023 announced Marvel's Spider-Man 2 as launching that day, describing a studio that "has created and developed award-winning video game franchises for nearly 30 years". Those are the two facts about the studio this article relies on: one publisher, one line of licensed Marvel games, dated by the publisher. The blog's 24 September 2025 announcement adds a casting credit, the actor Liam McIntyre providing the voice and motion capture for Logan, and the 23 July 2026 post names the composer: "Award-winning composer David Fleming crafted the music behind Marvel's Wolverine."

Seven official statements, one date, and the window narrowed once, from a season to a day, on 2 June 2026. Dates move. A stated date is a plan the publisher is currently making, not a record of something that happened, and if it changes the pages above will change before anything else does. This article records what those pages said on 7 September 2026, and the dataset row carries that date as the publisher's statement, not as a fact about a game that exists yet.

What the official pages say it is

The PlayStation.com description opens: "An all-new, action-packed adventure based on the legendary comic book character." The premise, in the page's words: "Logan thought he was finished being Wolverine, but the past wasn't finished with him yet. Three years after walking out on his team, Wolverine rejoins the mutant task force, Team X, in their darkest hour." The antagonist is named on the same page: "Driven by his fanatical belief in human superiority, Bolivar Trask is kidnapping mutants." The 2 June blog post calls the game "a brutal, violent, and action-packed single-player adventure", describes Team X as "a last-stand mutant task force", and introduces Jean Grey as "a powerful telekinetic and emergent leader" among the captured mutants. The July post names two more enemies, "The Hand as one of our new enemy factions, alongside Deathstrike, one of our big bads", and the 2025 announcement had already named Mystique, Omega Red and the Reavers.

Two structural facts are stated outright. The PlayStation.com page says: "Marvel's Wolverine is a single-player, narrative-driven action-adventure game. It is not set in an open world." Sony's corporate page says: "Marvel's Wolverine is built from the ground up for PlayStation 5 consoles. It will not be available for PlayStation 4 consoles." The same page lists the settings as "the frosted Canadian Wilderness, the narrow streets of Tokyo, and the high and low districts of the island nation of Madripoor".

Combat is described in the 28 August post as "fast, fluid, and ferocious combat with an emphasis on aggressive momentum", built around special moves the studio calls Techniques, of which "four Special Techniques can be equipped at once", and a rage system described as a "three-tiered pool of adrenaline that leans into survivability, resilience, and fury". Sony's hands-on report of 13 August, written after "a two-hour session" that opened with the first mission "in the wilds of Telambang", gives the tiers in practice: "Successful combos build up Wolverine's rage meter, which rises through three Rage Tiers to dramatically alter his fighting style", with a second-tier ability called Last Stand that lets him "use his rage to heal his body if fully downed", and an Enhanced Senses mode used to "track and takedown enemies more stealthily". The August post lists the modes as New Game Plus, Mission Replay, Nightmare Challenges and a Photo Mode, and promises "Over 100 suit options inspired by comics, movies, animation".

The rating

This one is already settled, which is unusual for a game that has not shipped. The ESRB record lists Marvel's Wolverine as "Mature 17+" with the descriptors "Blood and Gore, Drug Reference, Intense Violence, Partial Nudity, Strong Language" and the interactive element "In-Game Purchases". The board's summary is specific: "From a third-person perspective, players use melee attacks and special skills to kill enemy soldiers and robots in frenetic combat", and "Combat is highlighted by frequent blood-splatter effects, screams of pain, and dismemberment/decapitation." The UK PlayStation.com page lists PEGI 18 with the descriptors it shows as In-Game Purchases, Language and Violence. The studio's own description agrees with the raters: the 28 August post calls the game "unapologetically violent and gory" and says there are "toggles for violence and adult language". As in the Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 article, the descriptors above are quoted from the rating bodies and the store pages, not summarised.

What is known and what is not

Known, with the source Not known on 7 September 2026
Developer, publisher, platform (PlayStation.com) Any review score; none has been published
Stated date, 15 September 2026 (seven official pages) Any sales figure; the game has not been sold
Single-player, not open world (PlayStation.com) How long it is; the only official play statement is a two-hour preview
ESRB Mature 17+ and PEGI 18 (ESRB record; UK page) What the "In-Game Purchases" element refers to; no page itemises it
Prices: $69.99 and £69.99 standard, $79.99 and £79.99 Digital Deluxe, $10 or £10 upgrade (PlayStation.com) Any platform beyond PS5; the pages name none, and Sony's page rules out PS4
PS5 Pro support using PSSR (PlayStation.com) Resolution and frame-rate figures; the page says "exceptional image quality and frame rates" and gives no numbers
Composer David Fleming; Logan voiced by Liam McIntyre (PlayStation.Blog) The full credits; no official credit list is published

One inconsistency is worth stating rather than smoothing over. The PlayStation.com page shows "Accessibility features (35)" and the store page lists them by category, including "Adjustable Difficulty (Advanced)" and "Game Speed (Advanced)". The 28 August blog post says the game has "over 100+ new, returning and improved Accessibility Features". The thirty-five are the store's tagged categories and the hundred-plus is the studio's own count; both are quoted here and neither has been checked, because the game is not out.

Before you start, or before you pay

  • The date is a statement. Eight days is close, and the publisher has repeated it on seven pages, but this site's own name comes from a marketing campaign, covered in the blast processing article, and the lesson of that story applies to every claim made before a product ships: read it as a claim.
  • Know what pre-ordering buys. The PlayStation.com page lists the pre-order items as an early unlock of the Classic Brown Suit and the Reflective Claws, one Technique Point and four avatars; the Digital Deluxe Edition adds "Five exclusive suits", "Five exclusive claws" and "Four Technique Points". Every item is a cosmetic or a small head start on a system the 28 August post says you build through play anyway. Nothing listed is content you cannot otherwise reach.
  • Wait for reviews if a review matters to you. There are none, and the hands-on report is written by the publisher's own communications staff. That is not a criticism of it; it is what it is.
  • Take the rating at its word. Mature 17+ and PEGI 18, with dismemberment named in the ESRB summary, and the studio's own word for it is "gory". The toggles for violence and language exist, per the studio, but the ratings apply to the game as sold.
  • One player, one console. The store page lists "1 player", the game is PS5 only on every page read, and it uses the DualSense's "Vibration function and trigger effect", so play with the pad the console came with. A PS5 Pro is not required; the page says the Pro version uses PSSR and gives no numbers for either machine.
  • The bundle is a separate purchase. An 11 August post from Sony describes a limited PS5 Digital Edition bundle in "Battle Yellow" with a matching controller and a game code, "available beginning September 15 in limited quantities", at $649.99 in the US. It is a console with the game attached, not an edition of the game.

The row in the dataset

The dataset lists Marvel's Wolverine with Insomniac Games as developer and Sony Interactive Entertainment as publisher, a first release of 15 September 2026 on PlayStation 5, the genre action-adventure and the era upcoming, with the PlayStation.com game page as the source URL. It is the first row whose date is in the future, and the first whose first_release value is the publisher's statement rather than a record. When the date passes, the row will be checked against the same pages and corrected if the publisher moved; until then it is a promise, and the dataset says so in its era column.
